Design for All: Essential Accessibility Practices Workshop

Accessibility is more than making accommodations for those with disabilities. This outdated mindset quietly creates barriers and limits innovation.In this workshop, we will challenge common assumptions and misconceptions about accessibility and reframe it as a driver of growth and excellence in teaching. Through real-world examples,practical discussion, and interactive activities, you’ll discover why shifting from reactive fixes to proactive, inclusive design benefits everyone.We'll explore how to break down barriers, practicing design essentials for accessible digital content and inclusive physical spaces. Throughout the workshop, you'll have opportunities to put what you learn to practice with "fix it or redesign it" activities, including:

• Structure and focus order basics, comparing how to set up content in popular tools. 
• Different use cases for alternative text and image descriptions, along with tips and tools 
• for writing and adding them. 
• Appropriate color use and contrast, along with testing and simulation tools.
• Font size and style choices.
• Captioning, transcripts, and audio description workflows.
• Inclusive physical classroom setup

Participants will also learn about different types of assistive technology, such as screen readers and magnifiers, during a round of "accessibility roulette." We will discuss how these essential practices can integrate seamlessly into your processes without adding unnecessary work.
